The federal state Odisha is located in the East of India at the Bay of Bengal. Padampur is a small town with 18,000 inhabitants in North-Western Odisha. It lies only 15 kilometers from the border to the neighbouring state Chhattisgarh.

What is the family and social background of the girls in this home? Nearly all of the parents are daily workers stating their monthly wages as 45 to 70 Euro. This is hardly sufficient for the daily rice. Many of the girls had to borrow a fairly presentable dress when they were photographed at their admittance to the home. During the admission formalities it quickly shows that many parents are completely uneducated. Most parents are illiterates, some of them do not know their own age, not even approximately. This does not only make their every-day life difficult – it makes them vulnerable to fraud and deceit. They do not know what they “sign” with their thumb print, they cannot find out if they get an adequate price for their harvest is or if they are cheated when buying seeds or fertilizer. All this additionally aggravates the difficult situation of the families.
In such a situation when many families cannot even provide their children with basic supplies a school education cannot even be thought of. School attendance is compulsory, but the children would need school books, a school uniform and different fees must be paid. In reality, the families are already glad when they have enough money for a daily meal. The help of Christusträger-Waisendienst is open to all children in need, no matter what their religion or – still common in India – their caste is. The only decisive factor is who needs help most.
