The St. Joseph’s Day Care Centre is located in Dharkast in the state Tamil Nadu close to the border to Andhra Pradesh. Dharkast is lying in the direct surroundings of the big city of Chennai (former Madras). People in this area which frequently suffers from long drought periods live in unworthy conditions without any medical care. The parents of the children must earn their living as daily workers or don’t find any work at all. It is the children who suffer most.
This is the place where the sisters wanted to give help. Already in 1948 the convent of the Catholic “Sisters of Our Lady of Fatima” was founded. At first they opened a school to reduce illiteracy. In the beginning the sisters went from door to door as parents had to be persuaded first that it was good for their children to go to school. Today there is a teacher for each class who is paid by the government. The sisters give help and advice to the families in manifold problems. In 1970 the St. Joseph’s Day Care Centre was established to allow parents to look for work or go working without having to worry about their small children. The day care centre is financed completely by Christusträger-Waisendienst.
Today 60 children are looked after here during day-time. The children enjoy their time very much. Every morning after a prayer they get breakfast, then they learn some verses or sing songs and later they can play. Lunch is very important for them as well as another afternoon meal before going home.
