St. Joseph’s Home for Children is located in Dharkast in the state Tamil Nadu close to the border to Andhra Pradesh. Dharkast lies in the direct surroundings of the city of Chennai (formerly Madras). The area is very poor and often afflicted by drought periods, the population lives in unworthy conditions without any public health care. The children’s parents have to work as daily hands or don’t find work at all. It is the children who suffer most from these conditions.
This is where the sisters wanted to help. Already in 1948 the convent of the Catholic sisters of “Our Lady of Fatima” was founded. First of all a school was established to reduce illiteracy. In the beginning the sisters went from door to door to convince the parents that it was good for their children to go to school. Today a teacher for each class is financed by the government. The sisters are on hand with help and advice for the problems of many families most of which have many children. Apart from the school, a day-care centre for children and a medical station the sisters also have a girls’ home which is supported by CTW with sponsorships. In the St. Joseph’s Home for Children the girls find safe accommodation and loving care. “Our” girls get a well-balanced nutrition and full provision and they also benefit from the sisters’ medical centre and their school which offers an education far beyond the regional average.
As a sponsor for one of the girls you can help to relieve the distress in this region and support the facility.
