Indonesia is the largest island country in the world and has about 240 million inhabitants. It is a multi-ethnic state: On the more than 17,000 islands there are about 350 different ethnic groups. There are enormous cultural and economic differences between modern cities with millions of inhabitants and tiny remote jungle villages.
Although Indonesia is the country with largest Muslim population in the world, Islam is not the state religion. About 9 % of the population are Christians. On the island of Borneo the belief in ancestors and spirits is still widely spread. On this island Christusträger-Waisendienst supports a children’s day-care centre in Marikoi.
