Within a few decades Karachi has developed explosively into a city of 23 million inhabitants. Because of terror-related incidents and the high rate of crimes on its streets, Karachi is regarded as one of the most dangerous cities of the world. Poverty has grown along with the population. Children, especially those of Christian families, are often neglected and come from the poorest backgrounds. Their plight is shocking and heart-breaking. The “Educational Institute Charity” cares for about 100 children who have lost one or both parents. Two Christusträger Sisters from Germany run the Institute’s three homes and look after the children around the clock, assisted by German and local staff.
House Hanna is the home of about 35 children who are 4 to 20 years old, mainly girls, although some have their little brothers here until in 3rd class year of school, the boys can move into our boys’ home House Samuel. Every young child has an older partner who looks after him or her. As in a big family everyone does a share of household duties, and in this country, many things still have to be done by hand – the laundry, for instance. The feeling of being responsible helps the children to build a solid foundation for their future.
School is in the morning and supervised homework and tutoring in the afternoon. Most attend private schools. The aim is to foster every child’s personal talents and abilities, so that they can do well at school. Further vocational training is also pushed for, in spite of the many administrative complexities. Over the years many of the girls have been able to complete certified computer or sewing training programmes or have received a three-year diploma in nursing. Some former home children are now working for us as house mothers or tutors.
House Hanna also houses the Karachi-office of the “Educational Institute Charity”, an association of Pakistan. The office is operated by Christusträger Sisters Dagmar and Dietlinde whose living quarters are located in the same house.
Every Sunday, two of our children help the local pastor to conduct the worship service with their songs, prayers and Bible readings. A special service for the 30 youngest children is held by two girls in another room. It is wonderful to hear our children singing Christian songs loudly and joyfully. Almost every second Saturday, youth and Bible study groups meet in our houses. With the good News of Jesus Christ and through faith in Him, a real and fundamental change can happen in the life of the children, that will carry them through hard times in their future.
